Thinking of anything as “never-ending” can have a negative connotation in my mind. Or, maybe daunting or overwhelming…
The infinite nature of the universe…
Time…
Dark matter…
The digits in π…
Your fitness and nutrition journey…
See how I just threw that in there?? That’s right though, your fitness and nutrition journey is similar to the things listed above because it, too, never ends… It only evolves. (Technically, yes, someday each of our individual journeys will end, but you know what I’m saying!)
Depending on your perspective, this may or may not be a good thing.
Unlike school or classes we take, health and wellbeing aren’t programs that we graduate from or that have an endpoint.
We might reach goals. We might no longer be actively working towards something around our health and fitness. What our fitness and nutrition look like might change over time. But health efforts never end. We all need to eat, and our bodies require continual care.
Fitness practices and mindfulness around your food HAVE TO be a part of your life FOREVER if you want to maintain or work towards greater health or a different body composition.
Our bodies evolve, and so should our approach to health. Whether it's adapting to changing fitness goals or adjusting our nutritional intake based on different life stages, the journey is ongoing. Your movement practices and food intake might be different when you’re pregnant then when you’re not, for example. The amount of time you spend in the gym when you’re training for a bodybuilding competition might be different then when you’re doing lifestyle workouts. Understanding that health efforts persist through all of life’s seasons allows us to make sustainable lifestyle choices.
Once we embrace the fact that our health and fitness is concurrently never-ending AND always shifting, it becomes easier to work on and solidify non-negotiable habits that are important to us.
We drink a certain amount of water because that’s what we do.
We always eat mindfully, keeping balance across macronutrients or in relation to our goals in mind.
We engage in some physical activity on a regular basis.
These habits become ingrained in our daily routine, fostering that unending, lasting well-being.
Instead of this never-ending journey being daunting, we can choose to celebrate the fact that our commitment to health is a lifelong endeavor.
That being said, what non-negotiables do I recommend you start with??
These:
-Drink about 1/2 your body weight in ounces of water per day
-Eat 3-5 servings of protein per day (or 0.7g per pound of body weight/goal body weight) per day
-Eat 3-5 servings of fruits or veggies per day
-Moderate “treats”
-Moderate alcohol
The rest of your focuses will be the things that shift over time depending on where you’re at in your life.
If you want to work on establishing those non-negotiable habits, I invite you to join me for my 24 Day Jumpstart to 2024 challenge.
